One Laptop Per Child

Ecole Shalom's One Laptop per Child program gives each student an opportunity to learn 21st century skills with an educational laptop. Starting in kindergarten, students learn the basics of reading, typing, and creating content on the computer. Instead of rote memorization, Ecole Shalom's students are learning through creative projects. Teachers prepare classes that complement their lessons in French, Creole, math, and science. On a typical day, you could see 5th graders taking a quiz on fractions, kindergarteners pointing to colorful images of fruit, and an after-school computer club experimenting with solar sensors. Computer skills are valued in Haitian business. Becoming computer-literate at a young age will help kids be competitive and creative when using future technology. http://one.laptop.org/

Yogakids/ Bridge of Diamonds

Yogakids is an organization based in the United States that trains yoga teachers and provides yoga classes for children in and out of schools. Bridge of Diamonds is their non-profit organization that has been working in Haiti since February of 2011. HAC-Haiti was very proud to host their Foundation Training in August 2011, to teach local Haitian teachers to also become yoga teachers and utilize these skills within their classroom. Don Wenig (Founder of Yogakids), Eva Hall, and Lia Nikolaev did an amazing job training our local teachers to start utilizing yoga within their local classrooms. HAC-Haiti hopes to continue their work with Yogakids and Bridge of Diamonds and is currently planning their next event for March. Our plan is to have Don Wenig and other Yogakids volunteers provide yoga to our elementary school classes and afterschool program. We look forward to inviting our Haitian teachers previously trained, back for further hands on training with the children at Ecole Shalom. We also hope to develop a meditation retreat in beautiful Aux Cayes for Yogakids volunteers. As plans become more defined, we will post further information and pictures on this web page. http://yogakids.com/

Haiti Water

HAC-Haiti is committed to fighting public health issues in our community. In partnership with Haiti Water we established a safe water distribution program during the height of the recent cholera epidemic. Using a chlorine filtered tank we are providing over 2000 gallons of water per day to the community of Michaud in Croix-des-Bouquets. Since the water program has been implemented our area has seen dramatic decreases in cases of water born illness, specifically in individuals contracting Cholera.  We are constantly in need of donations to fund the purchase of chlorine tablets to continue providing safe water in Michaud. If you are interested in contributing to this effort, please visit our Donate page for details. http://haitiwater.org/
